Announcing Rachel Levin, Incoming Head of Lower School

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Rachel Levin as Head of Lower School at Sheridan, beginning July 1, 2025.
Rachel’s thorough experience in a variety of roles –  teacher, program leader, and administrator – made it clear that she is the perfect leader for our Lower School at Sheridan. Sheridan faculty and staff, as well as parents, were part of the search process led by Carney Sandoe and Associates that led to Rachel’s appointment. The group was impressed by Rachel’s thoughtful approach to questions of identity and inclusion, as well as her deep academic and practical knowledge of curriculum and learning practices.

Since 2022, Rachel has been the Associate Head of Lower School at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School, working to support teachers, ensure curriculum alignment, and create a joyful learning space for all lower school students and their families. Previous to stepping into the Associate Head job, Rachel was a Grade 3 teacher and team leader at St. Patrick’s for 11 years and, before that, worked in various schools in New York and Rome, Italy. While at St. Patrick’s, Rachel also served for seven years as the site director for Horizons Greater Washington, a tuition-free academic and enrichment program serving students from under-resourced communities in Grades 1-9 from Washington, DC, and Maryland.

Rachel holds an M.S.Ed. in Museum Education and Childhood Education from the prestigious Bank Street College of Education in New York City, and a B.A. in Art History and Italian Studies from Connecticut College in New London. Her other certifications include NY State Professional Certification in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6). She is also a frequent presenter about inclusive teaching practices at DC area conferences as well as national conferences such as NAIS.

She writes: “I am thrilled to be joining the Sheridan community as the Head of Lower School this summer. With over 20 years of experience in independent schools as a progressive classroom teacher and administrator, I have had the privilege of witnessing children’s learning unfold in environments that nurture curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. I am deeply committed to fostering a community where every child feels valued, inspired, and empowered to thrive. I look forward to partnering with Sheridan’s exceptional faculty, staff, and families to continue cultivating a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that supports the whole child.”

Rachel will begin her time at Sheridan on July 1, 2025, and we are thrilled that she is joining our community.
