Renovation Project

A Transformation to Meet Student Needs

Sheridan is embarking on an exciting renovation project beginning in January 2025. The renovation will include building an addition that creates more classroom, meeting, and event space to better match our program needs, and several features that will improve accessibility, safety, air quality, and security. We are excited to be working toward a physical space that better matches our deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Specifically, the project will add an elevator for enhanced accessibility, as well as a re-imagined school entrance with modernized security measures and more welcoming spaces for community gathering and socializing. The project will also add more Middle School classrooms and more Lower School reading and learning areas. As a progressive school with a strong focus on experiential education, we are also thrilled that this construction project will offer unique opportunities for our students to learn about the work being done.

Below, the renderings give an idea of how our new space might look, and the FAQ section offers details about what to expect.

We can’t wait for you to see our new space at the start of the 2025-26 school year!

FAQs

List of 5 frequently asked questions.

  • When does the project start, and how long will the project last?

The project is scheduled to start as soon as Winter Break begins, and construction is expected to be completed before the start of the 2025-26 school year.

Operations in the fall term will be as usual with one exception: Lower School science classes (currently in Room 202 upstairs) will meet in Room 113 downstairs (previously the grade 3-5 Spanish classroom) for the entirety of the school year. Grade 3-5 Spanish classes will meet in Room 202 (previously the Lower School science classroom) in the fall semester and a different location in the spring semester.
  • What will happen during construction?

When students return from Winter Break in January 2025, there will be some changes to access and entry into the building. Drop off and pick up will take place primarily through a relocated playground gate, and there will be limited street parking and no parking in front.

The only part of the building that will be affected during the school day is the front of the building. All construction will be separate from the main building while students are in school and there will be a double wall for sound abatement purposes. Students will not be displaced from their classrooms while construction takes place.

A full update on procedures for January 2025 and forward will be shared the week of December 9, 2024, and we will hold a follow-up Town Hall for Sheridan parents and guardians on December 11, 2024.
  • What safety processes will be in place during construction?

While students are in school, all construction will be separate from the main building and there will be a double wall for sound abatement purposes. All of the interior work within the school will happen during the summer of 2025 when students will not be in the building. There will be a six foot fence surrounding the exterior construction site and there will be separate entrances for all contractors. Workers will never commingle with students.
  • Who's doing the construction?

The construction company that we have chosen, Coakley & Williams Construction, is known for its experience, professionalism, and dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The firm has a strong local focus and over six decades of experience in the DC Metro area. Their portfolio includes K-12 private schools & higher education projects, multifamily housing, life science & technology facilities, industrial facilities, major municipal buildings, hospitality, and corporate interiors across the DMV.

One of the reasons that this firm stood out to our construction working group is its specialty in construction on occupied campuses and exemplary track record in maintaining security for students, parents, and faculty. They are also committed to making sure that the construction process can be a learning opportunity for the community.
  • Will there be CASA Summer Camp in 2025?

We are exploring options for holding a smaller, specialized CASA program next summer and will be in touch as soon as we know more details.
