Black Lives Matter at School Week
February 5-9 was Black Lives Matter at School Week for Sheridan! This week has been a tradition at our school for the past five years, coinciding with Black History Month, to express solidarity with Black individuals globally and affirm their value and worth. While many schools nationwide participate in this week of solidarity, our school community, dedicated to social justice, sees it as an integral part of our identity. It aligns with our longstanding commitment to recognizing the significance of justice for Black Americans and, indeed, for all of us.
This year, to round out our Black Lives Matter at School Week, we were lucky to have Dr. Tony Keith Jr. at our Friday assembly! Tony Keith is a Black American gay poet, spoken word artist, and Hip-Hop educational leader from Washington DC. He read us poems from his new memoir, "How the Boogeyman Became a Poet" , and talked with us about grappling with discrimination, overcoming his insecurities, and creating community in school. Thank you Dr. Keith for sharing your wisdom and creativity! In addition to hearing from Dr. Keith, students also were able to perform a song written by Serge Gegeon, our very own Middle School Music Teacher. The song is titled “Restore”.
